Specifics of the EEA Family Permit visa
Introducing the EEA Family Permit visa:
Caters for South Africans that are immediate family members of an EEA (European Economic Area) national. It is important to note that this visa is not available to South Africans whose immediate family member is a British national (that attempt comes up often).
Duration of visa:
The EEA Family Permit visa is issued for an initial duration of 6 months.
Granted. This EEA Family Permit visa grants settlement rights. Time spent in the UK therefore counts toward earning British nationality (and getting a British passport).
Permitted. Immediate family members (married like partner and minors) are permitted to join the EEA national.
3 weeks. From the date of submission, applicants experience an average of 15 working day processing times.
Common Reason for Refusal:
Most of these cases are refused based on insufficient evidence and evidencing incorrect intent.
Once South Africans are awarded entry clearance (permission to enter the UK), they can continually extend their visa (even after the Brexit terms are negotiated and implemented). After 6 continuous years of UK residence, applicants can claim British nationality through residence.
