Being under 26 does not by itself establish a UK work or working-holiday route. Nationality and the intended activity are important parts of the enquiry.
Does the Youth Mobility Scheme apply?
South Africa is not on the current list of eligible countries. A person with another qualifying nationality may have a different question, subject to the scheme's other conditions. Youth alone is not enough to qualify.
What else could be relevant?
Ancestry, study, family or a sponsored job can raise different opportunities depending on your circumstances. Explore the relevant guide rather than assume that a gap-year plan comes with permission to work.
