This assessment is designed for South Africans that need to evidence their English ability for visa qualifying purposes.

If you are exempt from needing a UK visa or you do not require a UK visa, then this assessment will not help your case.

Visitors and Transit exempt

The English test is needed in cases where South Africans apply to relocate, study or work in the UK.

When it comes to transiting the UK, on route to another destination, the SELT English test is not needed.

British passport holders are exempt.

If you have been awarded British citizenship (and have held a British passport), even if the British passport has expired, you are exempt from needing a UK visa.

Being a British national also exempts you from needing to complete an English test.

Holding nationality for one of these listed countries exempts you from needing to complete an English test for UK visa purposes.

The English test is treated as a demonstration of tertiary English ability. Minors are not expected to have tertiary education in order to enter the UK.

Your past qualifications unfortunately do not exempt you. An English test is needed to evidence your tertiary ability of English.

The point of the English test is to see if applicants have tertiary English ability. If you have completed a qualification (degree level or higher) in English, you have two options.

Option 1: Get UK NARIC to verify your qualifications at recognized and that they grant English ability recognition.

Option 2: Complete an English test.

Unfortunately, presenting your degree certificate alone will not exempt you from needing to evidence tertiary English ability.
