UK Spouse Visa Costs for South Africans (2026)
A UK spouse visa involves more than the application fee. For a South African applying from outside the UK in 2026, the main government costs are normally the £2,064 visa fee plus the immigration health surcharge.
This guide separates compulsory government charges, Move Up’s professional fee and the practical costs that vary by applicant. UK Visas and Immigration charges in sterling. The rand illustration below uses Move Up’s applied consular exchange rate and should be rechecked before payment.

These application-fee figures apply from 8 April 2026. Always check the live GOV.UK fee table immediately before payment.

How the immigration health surcharge is calculated
The surcharge gives the visa holder access to the NHS on broadly the same basis as a UK resident. It is calculated against the length of permission, rounded according to the government’s rules. A partner applying from outside the UK is normally granted 2 years and 9 months, so the online calculator may charge for three years rather than simply multiplying 2.75 by the annual rate.
The exact amount appears during the application. A different rate can apply to applicants under 18, students and certain other categories. The surcharge is separate from the visa fee and must normally be paid in full upfront.
Other costs South African applicants should budget for
- English-language test: if the applicant cannot rely on an accepted qualification, nationality or exemption.
- Tuberculosis test: where the applicant falls within the testing rules and applies from a listed country.
- Biometrics and application-centre services: the standard appointment may be included, while premium times, scanning, courier and lounge services cost extra.
- Translations: every document not in English or Welsh needs a compliant certified translation.
- Document retrieval: unabridged certificates, historical records, bank letters and replacement documents can have their own fees.
- Professional help: legal or application-support fees vary with the complexity and scope of work.
- Priority processing: only when offered for the route and location; availability is not guaranteed.
- Exchange-rate and card charges: allow a buffer because payment processors set the final rand amount.
How to use the estimate
The R155,763 estimate covers the four items shown in Move Up’s 8 April 2026 schedule. Add any applicant-specific costs such as an English test, tuberculosis test, translations, document retrieval, premium appointment or priority processing. Optional application-centre extras mainly change convenience or speed; they do not strengthen the merits of an application.
Important: A partner extension and eventual settlement application have separate future fees. Plan for the full immigration journey, not only the first application.
Can the financial requirement and the visa cost use the same money?
The application fee is an expense. The financial requirement is a separate eligibility test. If you rely on cash savings to meet the financial requirement, paying application costs from those funds can reduce the balance below the required level. Check the calculation and evidence period before moving or spending the money.
Are spouse visa fees refundable?
Refund rules depend on the charge and the stage of the application. A refused application fee is normally not refunded. The immigration health surcharge is usually refunded after a refusal or withdrawal in qualifying circumstances, although processing can take time. Optional centre services may have their own terms.
Ways to avoid unnecessary cost
- Confirm the correct route before paying.
- Test the financial category and evidence dates before submitting.
- Use optional priority or premium services only when they solve a real need.
- Upload a complete, clearly labelled bundle to reduce avoidable queries.
- Keep payment receipts and a full copy of the submitted application.
