Don’t Confuse These Three Travel Requirements
If you’re travelling from South Africa to the UK, you may hear people talking about UK visas, eVisas and the new SARS Traveller Declaration in the same conversation.
Although they all relate to international travel, they serve completely different purposes.
Understanding the difference is becoming increasingly important.
1. Your UK Visa
A UK visa is your immigration permission.
Depending on your nationality and the reason for your visit, you may need permission to:
- Visit
- Work
- Study
- Join family
- Settle permanently
Your visa determines whether you are allowed to enter the UK and under what conditions.
Without the correct immigration permission, you simply cannot begin your journey.
2. Your UK eVisa
Once your immigration application has been approved, many applicants are no longer relying on physical documents as proof of their immigration status.
Instead, the UK is moving towards a fully digital immigration system known as the eVisa.
Your eVisa is digital proof of your immigration permission.
It can be viewed through your UKVI account and will increasingly replace physical visa evidence for many applicants.
Importantly:
A UK Visa gives you permission.
An eVisa is how that permission is evidenced digitally.
Although closely connected, they are not the same thing.
3. Your SARS Traveller Declaration
From 1 July 2026, South Africa introduced its new online Traveller Declaration.
Unlike the first two requirements, this has nothing to do with UK immigration.
Instead, it is a South African customs declaration completed before entering or leaving South Africa.
Its purpose is to simplify customs processes and improve border management.
It does not replace your visa.
It does not replace your eVisa.
It is simply another digital requirement travellers now need to understand.
One Journey. Three Different Systems.
This is where confusion often begins.
Many travellers assume these systems all belong to one process.
In reality, they are administered by different authorities.

This trend is likely to continue.
