Quick Perspective on History

History is a sensitive topic and the objective of this section merely serves to create consideration to a different side of the coin.

Bil Keane said: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present."

UK history: In 43AD, Romans invaded Britain.

Roman roads remain the fundamental transportation routes that exist today.

OK. So the British have been invaded themselves.

Vikings raided frequently in 800AD

Norsemen settled in large parts of England.

England has had it's fair share of foreign attacks.

Magna Carta was setup in 1215

The longest established common law, fundamental principles of the governance of the UK. Allowing free people to have"equality before the law".

First laws were drawn up in the UK.

In 1833 British made slavery illegal.

Campaigning to stop slavery started in 1780. Between 1662 and 1807, the British traded approximately 3.4m African slaves. Brazil and Portugal traded higher numbers than the British.

Britian ended slave trading in 1833. Got it.

South Africa was a British colony

From 1795 to 1803 and again from 1806 to 1961.

The British ruled over SA for over a centaury. Thanks for reminder.

Boer fought against British rule.

There were two Anglo-Boer wars. First was fought in Dec 1880 until Mar 1881 (Boer won) and the second fought in Oct 1899 to May 1902 (British won). The first war was fought for independence. The second war was fought for control of diamond and gold mines.

2 wars were fought. Got it.

In the second Anglo-Boer war, the British invented concerntration camps.

Originally the camps were set up as refugee camps as the Boer men would leave their wives and kids at home while they fought against the Boer.

The British invented concentration camps.

The Boer invented terrorism warfare.

Guerilla warfare was invented by the Boer. Small teams disrupting the hierarchy and predictable structure of traditional armies. The British army initially struggled to adapt.

The Boer outsmarted the British initially.

The British initiated a scorched earth policy.

To counter the guerilla attacks, the British systematically destroyed crops and slaughtered livestock, to stop the Boers from resupplying from home. Also separating children and wives was emotionally crippling.

Scorched earth policy was tough.

The British army ran out of money and food.

Starvation struck. The refugees, children and wives, lost their lives in the concentration camps. Not deliberately or intentionally. However, lives were lost. Unnecessarily.

It is a sad part of our past.

British Empire peaked in 1921

After Wordl War 1, The British ruled over North-East America, Canada, Ireland, Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand (to name most of the countries they ruled over).

British Empire was big.

Anglo-Boer war versus British Empire

If you compare our 2 Boer wars with the number of wars that the UK has entered into, you can understand that the British hold no grudges against our past. It is just one of the many battles they have experienced.

Good to know that the UK has no bad blood.
