Marriage and nationality

Explore what marriage means for your nationality question.

A marriage can be an important event in a family history, but it does not automatically make someone British. Historical nationality questions and present-day partner immigration questions should be considered separately.

Why does the date matter?

Nationality can depend on the rules and circumstances relevant to an event in the past. A present-day description of the relationship may not explain how a historical status arose or whether it passed to another generation.

How is this different from a family visa?

A family visa concerns permission to live in the UK through a qualifying family relationship. A nationality investigation asks whether citizenship already exists or whether a route to acquiring it may be relevant.
