British nationality

Citizenship may be a later milestone in your UK journey.

Naturalisation is an application to become British. It is different from confirming citizenship already held through birth or family history, and different from receiving settlement permission.

Why does your UK history matter?

Residence, immigration status, time outside the UK and other personal requirements can affect the enquiry. Meeting a residence milestone does not make citizenship automatic.

Does marriage change the position?

Being married to a British citizen can affect which naturalisation provisions are relevant. Marriage itself does not grant citizenship, and other requirements still need to be considered.
