Nationality through descent

Understand how British nationality can pass through a family.

Citizenship by descent concerns how nationality is acquired through a parent. It does not mean every descendant of a British person automatically holds British citizenship.

Why does the parent's status matter?

How and when a parent became British can affect what could pass to a child born outside the UK. The child's birth date and family circumstances also belong to the enquiry.

Where do later generations fit?

A British grandparent can be relevant, but the intervening generation cannot simply be skipped. A special registration possibility is also different from citizenship already held from birth.
